I'm in a group of 3 20-somethings and we're looking for the best place to hike the Great Wall. We are currently on top of Huang Shan after taking the west steps up today...what a hike!

We're looking for a place to hike the Wall that isn't crowded, and we don't mind and might even enjoy a good/strenuous hike. Is Simatai the best choice?

If we go to Simatai, do we need to spend the night there? If so, where is a good place? What about camping, is this an option?

Or is there somewhere other than Simatai that is really great?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, Simatai is the place to be for the true ancient Great Wall without masstourism and tourist traps.

And here is why:
The wall goes up on the thin mountain ridge looking like a dragons back. It`s in the original state without the newest renovations like in Badaling, which is more like a Disney Land. In Simatai the wall is broken, steps are missing and trees grow on the Towers. Some parts are so steep you need to go on your feet and hands! Be aware, there are no banisters stopping you from falling down the cliffs. Here you can enjoy the silence of this magnificent world heritage on your own. I?e been there with a friend on our own for a whole day - not one single soul came passing by. It was great!

You can hike from Muntiyanu all the way to Simatai if you want to sleep on the wall. If you are really adventurous you go further into the Simatai part, which gets quite difficult.

A great guy for organizing trips to the Great Wall for reasonable prices is Mr. John:
