We will be going to Shanghai, Hangzhou, Huangshan, Shenzhen, Guilin/Yangshuo, Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, Dunhuang, Zhangye, and Xi'An. We're in our 20's, have been to China before, and we all are well rounded in Chinese. Other than general tips (which are always appreciated), I've got some specific questions. In this trip, other than Jiuzhaigou, Huangshan, and Yangshuo. We'll be using the train as transportation. Being 5 of us, we understand that we cannot put 5 people in one soft sleeper and considering some rides are over 24 hours long, we'd really prefer the soft sleeper. So question #1- Is there anyway to secure a room/cabin for 4 of us? That way the 5th person would simply put his gear in the main room and basically only sleep in their room. Also, because of the amount of things to do and unaccounted variables, we simply cannot purchase all these tickets weeks in advance because we won't know what we'll be doing until say 2 days in advance (make no mistake, we have an itinerary). Which brings me to #2- If there is a "yes" for #1, is it possible to fulfill it 1-3 days in advance? As I said before, any tips would be welcome. But booking the hostels, trains, and buses this early would simply be impossible for this trip.

DRPHIL321, it's impossible to secure a cabin for 4 people. When you buy the tickets at the railway station, you may ask the ticket seller if they can do that for you. If they can't, you may figure it out when you board the train. You may ask other passengers in the same cabin if they are willing to change their berths. Some passengers are nice and willing to do that.

I am afraid that you may not secure soft sleepers if you buy tickets in 1 or 3 days. You know, you come during the summer vacation. Today, more and more students go out to travel during their vacation. If possible, please book your tickets as early as you can.
