Hong Kong to Mainland, any ideas???

Hi, I am planning a trip to Hong Kong this summer and I am giving myself a week to go to mainland China. Although I am kind of lost on this because I am not sure where to go and how to get there. Does anyone have some advice on what to do?
oh ya and I would prefer to travel without a tour group.

Shenzhen is the best transition from HK to mainland China. KCR, ferry and bus can all get you to Shenzhen Luo Hu border. after passing the immigration counters, you'll enter the mainland territory.

the best way is to take a KCR train from HK to Lo Hu Border, very fast and convenient.
