It should be trains. It takes 18.5 to 20 hours. The hard seat is CNY 192. Hard berth costs CNY 351 and soft berth costs CNY 615. In your return trip, you should take train too if you still prefer to use cheapest transportation means.

If possible, you may take flights too. The cost is almost the same to the train tickets during low season. But it is faster, probaby 2 to 3 hours.
