Learn easy Chinese: The mid-autumn Festival

As you are learning how to speak Chinese language, the mid-autumn day is the festival that you should know something about. It was created in ancient China, in modern society, it is as important as the Spring Festival, and we will have a three-day-holiday in the whole country.

The mid-autumn Festival is on the 15th of August in lunar calendar, on which day the moon will be the most rounded throughout the year. However, some people mat told you that it will be the most rounded in the day after the Mid-autumn Day. Whatever, you must have learnt from Mandarin school that the Mid-autumn Day is a Festival of moon. On this day people will eat a desert called moon-cake, the shape of which is just like the moon. In Chinese, “ 圆( yuan2)” means “团圆( tuan2yuan2 )” , as a result it is also a festival for families to get together and have a good time with their family members.

There is a fairy tale of the Mid-autumn Festival helping to learn easy Chinese. It is said that Chang’e was the wife of Houyi, after he shooting off 9 suns, the Xi Wangmu give him some medicine which would make people stay youth forever. Reluctant eating them, he gave them to his wife and asked her to keep them. However one day when Houyi was not at home, his apprentice came to their house and forced Chang’e to give him medicines. She had no choice but to eat all the medicines on her own. After that she flied into the sky and become an immortal. Missing her husband, Chang’e choose moon to set down, which is the nearest planet from the Earth, and she lived in the GuanghanGong in the last. Houyi felt miserable greatly but there was nothing helps. From then at the same time of every year he would make a feast, facing the moon to get together with his wife.
