im going on an university student exchange for a semester in china this year but i will most likely be sentenced for drug possession - and maybe with supply too - before the exchange.
i was wondering if it's a big problem if i were to apply for visa?

GUEST52242,
First, you should understand that the consular officers decide whether you will be granted with a visa or not. They won't tell you why you are refused and whether they checked your background.
Second, many other people have the same problem when they fill the application form. There is a question "Do you have criminal record?" Facing this question, they have different answers. Honest people checked Yes because they did have criminal records. Finally, they got their visas too. Some other people checked No because they didn't risk of being refused for their previous criminal records. At last, they got their visas too.
See, there is no standard answer to your question. It may depend on your luck. If you are lucky, you will get your visa even if you checked Yes. Anyway, you have fifty percent chance to get it if you apply. Just give it a try.
