Did you mean that your employer didn't want you to go home? Or you came to work in Shanghai with the help of the agent in your country. The agent who helped(sponored) your work in Shanghai didn't want you to come back. If your employer didn't agree, it wouldn't have been a problem. You can go to local labor bureau and ask for terminating your contract.

If it was the agent in your country who didn't want you to come back, then I couldn't help. But you still may try to contact your embassy in China and local police station in your country to help you.

It takes four working days to deal with the applicant's application, meaning the applicant can get their passports and visas on the fourth working day. Did he apply via CVASC? If so, he should immediately visit the CVASC center and ask if they can help him get back his passport and visa. If not, I am afraid that he needs to reschedule his plane. Without his passport in hands, I am afraid that he can't even board the airplane.
