REQUIREMENT OF INVITATION FOR VISA TO CHINA

I have come to know that a invitation of some kind is required for getting a visa. I am a Indian citizen. I would like to know if this invitation is compulsory and the process of getting the invitation so that I can start planning a trip to China

Hi....i just arrived in China(Harbin). Your invitation will come from your prospective employer once you have agreed to accept employment. Depending on your type visa the invitation will specify that and your employer. almost always it will be a Z visa(working visa)

I am looking for a tourist visa and not a employment visa. Actually I am surprised that there is a requirement of invitation even in that case. I would be thankful if there is any information at your end
