Travel from S-E Yunnan to N. Laos by Public Transport

How to travel by public transport from Jiangcheng(S. Yunnan after Luchun town) to Mengla on the way to N.Laos port of Boten. Lonely Planet suggests to go to Jinghong in Xishuangbanna & spend sometime in the region before taking a bus from Jinghong to Mengla or even all the way to the border port of Mohan(China) or even as far as Luang Namtha? Any help will be much appreciated.
