I followed the Silk Road from Beiging, China to Islamabad, Pakistan the month before 9/11/2001. The most memorable part of the trip was the visit to Kashgar and the mountains beyond. Next time I get on-line I'll attach some pictures.

Sounds great, your trip. I? going to go to Kashgar. Is it easy to get a bus and visa for Islamabad there? Do you think the pass will still be open in december?

You'd better ask a travel agent for help to get the visa for Islamabad efficiently. With mild climate, the bus for there is available from Apr to Oct of every year, because the pass will be closed around Decemeber for the heavy snow. However, you still have another choice, that is to fly to Islamabad from Urumqi.
