Hello! I’m an EU passport holder and will travel from Turkey to Australia. The plane stops in Urumqi (5-hour layover) and Guangzhou (10-hour layover). Altogether, about 20 hours in China. I know I have right to stay in Guangzhou without a visa but what about Urumqi? I’m not going to leave the airport of course but am I still required to have a Chinese visa? Thanks!

In fact, you can make use of 24 hours free transit policy. In this way, you needn't apply for Chinese visa in advance. After you land Urumqi airport, you need to apply for a stay permit. It is a stamp on your passport and you can get it for free. With this stay permit on your passport, you won't apply visa for reaching Guangzhou.
