October we are traveling from US to London / Paris / Saigon / HK / Shanghai / Beijing / US

I don't live near a China consulate in US. Is it practical to apply for China visa in London, Paris, or HK along the way? Any disadvantges to that vs getting it in US?

Yes, it's true that you can apply in HK. There are some Americans who applied successfully even though they don't have resident status in HK as it is required. But if I were you, I would apply from Chinese consulate in US. The risk of being rejected is lower in US than in other countries.

Suppose you can't get your entry permit to China, your whole schedule will be affected. So please apply before you go and then you needn't worry about anything.
