guestNewToChina! Hello experinced traveller's!

My partner and I will be travelling through China from mid Feb to early March. We are set on what to do on the first part of the trip but unsure as to travel means and the most efficient sequence as to visit a few places. We plan on departing Xi'an on the evening or night of the 23rd Feb, after Xi'an we would like to see Fenghuang (Phoenix Ancient Town) and also travel the Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo. Once we have finished visiting these places we would like to travel to huangshan and continue our trip at yellow mountain.

We are on a tight budget and prefer to take cheaper means of travel where possible, and would prefer to travel at night to make the most of each day. We would spend more money on transport if it ment saving a day (daylight hours) of travel.

We have found limited information on travel between Xi'an, Fenghuang, and Guilin. I was wondering if anyone had any experince or a suggestion for the most efficient and cheapest way to see these places so we would minimise time transporting from one to the other and would be setup to travel to huangshan after seeing both the Li River and Fenghuang.

Any information would be very much appreciated!

Thank you for any time you spend helping us out! 😄

GUEST9554 I think you'd better rearrange your itinerary. You should visit Huangshan first, then Fenghuang, Xian and Guilin. If you are on a budget tour, then train and bus should be your choices.

After visiting Mt. Huangshan, you can take train K155 to Huaihua first. It departs at 23:15 and arrives at 15:27. You can take a hard berth. It costs around CNY 279.5. Upon arrival, you can take bus no. 17 and get off Huaihua West Bus Station. There are buses for Fenghuang. It costs around CNY 32 and takes an hour to reach Fenghuang.

After vsiting Fenghuang, you can take bus from there to Changsha. It stops at Changsha West Bus Station. The bus journey is around 6 hours. Then take bus no. 312 to Changsha Railway Station. There you can take train to Xian. It takes around 15 to 20 hours, depending on what kind of trains you take. A hard berth costs around CNY279.5 or CNY 317.5. If you can afford the high speed trains, you can take bus no. 63 or 66 from the bus station to Changsha South Railway Station. It takes around 40 minutes. There you can take high speed trains to Xian North. A second class seat costs around CNY 590. However, it just takes around 6.5 hours. Upon arrival, you can take subway line 2 to reach the downtown area of Xian.

After visiting Xian, you can take train from Xian Railway Station to Guilin North directly. It takes around 27 hours. A hard berth costs around CNY 397.
PS: You are suggested to buy the train tickets in advance with the help of some agents/websites. It will be late if you just arrive in a city and buy the train tickets because the tickets might be sold out.

For bus tickets, you can buy after you arrive.
