guestDaniel	Hi there, I am wondering if the following will work, with the 72 visa free period. I am flying into Shanghai on Sunday, arriving 4:55am. I am flying back Tuesday,8.40pm - but there is a 26h layover in Beijing with this flight. So I fly from Beijing to Brussels at 1:20am, on Thursday early Morning I believe. Now, as far as I understand it, if I arrive Sunday Morning, my 72h period starts Monday 00:00. So I would need to leave Shanghai by Thursday 00:00. Which I practically do earlier, but I have this layover in Beijing and practically only really leave China on Thursday 1:20 am. What do you think? Thanks a lot! Daniel

Daniel, no, you cannot use the 72 hour free transit because the 72 hour policy stipulates that one is only allowed to transit in ONE Chinese city, but according to your travel route, you will stop in two. Besides, you said that you fly back which means after transiting in PRC, you fly back to the last country you departed; but in principle, you should fly to a third country or region.
Considering your situation, you should apply for a tourist L type ahead of your trip!
