Non touristical china

After learning chinese for a couple of months (with poor results) In july i start a big tour of china: Datong, Xian, Chendu, Kunming, Guilin, Shanghai, Honkong.. But these names are just for reference.. I want to see the real life in China.. Intend to stop at regular towns and villages, and maybe totally skip the touristical parts if i dont have enough time (1 month too short?!!) Any comments, advice, applicable experience??

Xi'an is extremely hot recently ,you should prepare sufficiently for your trip,sunglasses,cool cloth ,sunbonnet,canteen ~~~~
