US citizen here. Traveling to GUANGZHOU on Sept 2nd at 855 pm (through Beijing from Detroit). Will take a train the next day to Hong Kong for a week (will be in Macau for two days during that time). Will then take a train back to GUANGZHOU for a flight that leaves Sunday the 11th.
The total time in China mainland will be less than 72 hours, however not sure if that applies where I won't need a visa?
Thanks!

You are not eligible for the 72 hour free transit if you travel like that because you will stop in two Chinese cities.
But if both your transit time in PRC is less than 24 hours respectively, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit for both legs of your trip and no visa is needed then.
However, if it is more than 24 hours, you need to apply for a tourist visa or transit visa ahead of time for your two transits in PRC.
