Do Foreign travelers (L-visa) need to get temporary residence permits?

Hi, preparing to travel to china for a weekend.
I'm trying to stay in Airbnb listing, and I have an issue with getting the temporary residence permit.
The hotel would register us to the local police station on our check-in, but the airbnb listing probably won't be able to.
Are residence permits still mandatory for foreign travelers?

Well, if you enter as a tourist, actually you don't need to get the temporary residence permit, but you still need to register at the local police station. If the aribnb does not help you with this, you can go to the neraby police station to do it on your own. It's mandatory for foreign travelers.

Thanks for the answer,
will this be a complicated process? Will I need some paper work for the place I'm staying at? In which case, I think I'd better just cancel airbnb and go to a hotel...

Well, this is a simple process. You just need to show your passport and visa to the place you are staying at and to the police. It's easy to register at the police.
