Layover in Guangzhou from Bali to San Francisco without visa

Im planning on heading back to San Francisco (US citizen) via Guangzhou in 7 days but wanted to visit Hong Kong for a couple days. I know I dont need a visa for Hong Kong but wasnt sure about Guangzhou. Would it be possible to obtain a visa in Bali, If I need one? I know there is a 72 hour visa but wasnt sure if with that I could travel to HK.

GUEST04154 If you fly from HK to Guangzhou and then onward to SF, you can make use of the 72-hour free transit policy. If you are not eligible, you need to apply a visa for Guangzhou. It's possible to do the application in the CVASC in Jakarta, Surabaya or Medan if you are in Indonesia.
