On December 25, the overall ground breaking ceremony of the Sino-Laos railway was held in Luang Prabang, north part of Laos. Thongloun, premier of Laos, led the delegates from both parties to attend the ceremony.

The railway extends from the frontier port of Mohan-Moding in the north to Vientiane in the south. The total length is over 400 kilometers and 67.2% of it is bridges and tunnels. The designed speed is 160 km per hour. 32 stations will be built on the route. The estimated construction period is 5 years and total investment reaches 40 billion RMB. For the shareholding ratios, China owns 70% and Laos owns 30%. This railway will be the first overseas railway project, in which China is the dominant investor and constructor. Upon completion, the railway will be connected to China’s railway network and co-operated by the two countries. The railway adopted China’s technical standards and Chinese equipments.

At present, the economic cooperation between China and Laos has seen good momentum. In 2015, the bilateral trade volume was 2.78 billion dollars. During this years’ January to October, the number is 1.82 billion dollars. China is the first-largest donor country, the largest foreign investment source and the second-largest trade partner; Laos is the third-largest investment destination among the ASEAN countries for China.

This railway project will greatly promote the two countries’ cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment, tourism, etc. and strengthen the economic tiles in the China-ASEAN trade zone.
