Hi,welcome to China. You'll love Xiamen. It's nice laid back city on the coast with lots of parks and easy access to most places on public transport. While the beaches are not what you're used to you can still swim or enjoy a walk. Summers are hot and humid but no worse than many other places in China and mild in comparison to Europe in the winter. Still need some warm woolies for the few really cold weeks. There are lots of foreingers living an dworking there and you would have more chance of meeting them once you've arrived and settled in. Gulangyu Island is a great place to live or just hangout. Good luck

Um something about the swimming area.b.c some obviously reason, those beach near the xiamen university is not ok for swimming i think.you should go a little North far,the place named"Pearl Bay"and the "city of sun"something...less polluted and less people also.
