Overland from Kathmandu - Beijing in 3 weeks?

Hi, has anyone traveled from Kathmandu-Lhasa-Beijing before? If so, do you think it is possible (and fun!) to do this trip in three weeks? Do you have any tips on how to travel (mode of transport, connections)? Is it possible to get the necessary documents for Tibet from a Chinese embassy in Europe, so that you don't have to spend time waiting later?
