I'd read in a Chinese photography magazine that the only night that the lights go on at the Summer Palace is 15 Aug. Does anyone know whether the Summer Palace closes later than normal on that night? If so, would there be any convenient transport back to the city centre at night time? Thanks in advance.

I have a friend in Beijing who is local, he called the intendant in the Summer Palace and was told that it had not been decided yet if any special activities would be held on Mid-Autumn Day. Taking taxi is very convenient, even very late in night. PS. Mid-Autumn day is not 15 Aug, but 18 Sep. I will be back with updated news, good luck!

Thanks to everyone who have answered. I will definitely be visiting Beijing in September in the week before or after mid-Autumn. I hope the weather would be clear that night for some photography.

When you said "August", you meant August, the word itself represents the eighth month of the year in GREGORIAN CALENDAR not the lunar calendar, that's why I emphasized Mid-Autumn was not on August 15 but on Sep 16 in 2005.

Rita - yes I meant the calendar date 18/9 & knew what you meant. We use "15 August" as alternative for "Mid-Autumn" as the name for the festival here in Hong Kong.
