144 hours transit visa in Chengdu

I am travelling direct London to Chengdu. Spending less than 144 hours in Chengdu then flying direct onto Hong Kong. Spending a day in HKG and then flying back to London. Does anybody know if this routing will qualify for the 144 transit visa?
If so, do I need to spend a minimum of 24 hours in HKG? Or can I spend just a day there?
