Getting from Beijing )or Shanghai) to Vietnam

My wife and I intend to visit in October and then go on to Pan Thiet in Vietnam. Apart from flying or the train (sounds good but changing trains after midnight does not fill us with delight!) what other options are there? Can we go by sea?

several years ago i travelled there by train from Chongqing and it was a long long journey......
unless you enjoy travelling by train, or you'd better flying there, hehe.

p.s. Viet Nam is a fantastic place, wish you'll enjoy your visit there:)
