I suggest you just take train from Beijing to wherever you are interested, you do not have to do it along the way from Beijing to Xi'an, for the coverage of railway networks in China are very extensive, almost all the large and mediam sized cities have direct trains to Beijing and Xian. If doing it your mentioned way, you might feel trammeled, I guess.

Da Tong is a must (6h by train right on the track to Xian, 46 Yuan as Hard Seat). The Yungang Caves are the best throughout China. The Hanging Temple or Xuangkong Si is magnificent and there are some more great cultural sights.....for more infos read my report about Datong or check some pics.

From there it i easy to take daily trains to Xian - like I said it is on the same track!

Why don't you somewhere else directly and then transfer to Xi'an ?That's more economical and time saving .
