We will be arounf Kunming on the 1st october. I hear that getting around at that time can be difficult

How difficult is travelling in the first week of October. Is it possible to buy train tickets, is anything open that week. Is this obvious in the cities as well or just in the rural areas.

Any advice welcome

Yes everything is open and it's possbile to get tickets for trains but don't expect to get them the same day. Plan ahead and have someone get them for you to avoid the hustle of the ticket office. Try to avoid the really popular places that the Chinese love to go to. Plenty of off the beaten track places that are just as good value without the crowds.
