I'm staying in Xiamen until November, have you any great ideas of places to visit and things to do? Also I need to buy a digital camera, do you know the best places?

Have you been to Gulangyu? It's my favorite. Strolling along the keyboard road, listening to the music in the air..., it' s like traveling back to the beginning of last century:)

Check out the Hakka communities around Yongding. Take the train 5hrs if I remember right to Longyan a pleasant enough city if you need to overnight an take a bus to Yongding. Bus stops outside a community of square and round houses. You can stay in the "roundhouses" operating as hotels. Motorcyle is the best way to get around te distrcit to see more of them.

Also Quanzhou the ancient port a few hours up the coast. You can find info on these places in Lp or on the 'net'

And Wuyishan in the north west is pretty good value. overnight train there and back. Avoid the October holiday!!!!!!

You can manage each of these in a weekend if you plan well.
Good luck

Dongshan Dao, 2 hours south on the coast is nice for swimming: good water, waves, nice beach, small seafood restaurant on the shore. I've been there for 1st october 2 years ago and did wild camping with my tent on the beach, local people are real nice. There is also an hotel nearby ;).
