Chongqing
August 14, 2005 - August 15, 2005

Gongtan, an ancient village on the Wu Jiang, once host to a rock climbing competition, is soon to be flooded when a new dam comes online. Popular for white water rafting on the Apeng River nearby. The best form of transport in and out is by boat down the sometimes treacherous Wu Jiang which still bears stark witness to the boat tracking days before powered boats were introduced.

Fenghuang

Fenghuang or Pheonix town, an ancient walled city that may well rival Lijiang or Dali in the future with loads of atmosphere and loads of tourists.

Kaili

This time heading north to Shibing for a fabulous rafting trip on the Shan Mu river and Zhenyuan an interesting old garrison town on the Wuyang River. Cruising the Wuyang and hiking the beautiful Tie Xi gorge.

Back to Kaili, this time staying in the Miao village of Lengde Shang where a bath is taken in a water hole recently vacated by water buffalo.

We visit another of my mothers University classmates from 1986 before she prepares to fly home. Zhuhai is a wonderful modern coastal city with a very clean and relaxed atmosphere and is the gateway to Macau and Hongkong.
