Jiayuguan

More desert surrounds Jiayuguan another oasis with an old fort, more of the Great Wall to climb at its western extremity - both derelict and reconstructed - and an exciting flying fox across the river.

Xinjiang

Hami famous for it's melons is another 'Oasis'on the ancient silk road. We spent a pleasant afternoon chatting with young students keen to practice some English and enjoying frozen yogurt.

Turpan

In Turpan we celebrate my sister's 50th birthday with a night spent under the stars in the desert-was a real delight, as were the local people.

Urumqi

Finally arrived to see the famous Terracotta Warriors and cycle on the old city walls. This was my first time to ride since arriving in China.

Chongqing

Wulong, on the Wu Jiang south of Fuling is renown for it's Karst country, Three Natural Stone Bridges Park and some alpine grasslands called Fairy Maiden Mountain, rafting and caving. Great spot to star gaze after you've been star starved.

Shanhaiguan

Laolongtou or Old Dragon Head is where the Great Wall meets the sea and a military fort and garrison make for a facinating visit to Shanhaiguan

Beijing

My mother flew in this week for a five month stay. We revisited the University where she studied in 1986, caught up with a friend, staying in her renovated Siheyuan (courtyard home), enjoyed the sun and spring air, the usual city sights.

Chengdu

This was my second visit to Chengdu, visitng Qingcheng Houshan and the ancient flood prevention and irrigation project of Dujiangyan on the Min Jiang for the second time. My first visit had also included the Giant Panda Research Station.

Guizhou
November 7, 2003 - November 9, 2003

Included a visit to beautiful Huongguoshu Falls, Huaxi and Qingyan an interesting fortified military outpost to the east of Guiyang. What a land of contrasts.
