Qingdao, home of the eponymous beer, safe swimming beaches, beautiful Cathedral and so many sea-food restaurants you won't know which way to turn.Stand at the end of the pier after dusk with just about the whole local population and take in the lapping waves and remember the sea-mist of the morning that meant you couldn't see more than 60m. Well, that summer humidity does it every time. After exploring the main town just up the hill take a bus or the promenade past the market stalls, (better at night) and the 'Famous Composers Gardens' listening to piped Beethoven and Strauss. Remember to check out the gym equipment on the beach under the wooden promenade next to the main park, (home of the beer festival, or at least part of it) and middle aged local men performing all manner of tricks on the parallel bars and often outdoing the new generation much to their delight.
Walking the other way from the pier will take you to a popular harbour for swimmers and the peculiar tradition of fishing out baby crabs from the sea wall with lollipop sticks, it's amazingly difficult as they're tricky little...anyway, off again
to look around the shops and get some more of those hidden little gems of European style architecture.
