be aware of those so-called Optional Tours
By LORA | 4/13/2004 2:17:28 PM
hi, i just came back from beijing, and i met the most disappointing thing with my agent!! i'd like to post my bad experience here and hope you can avoid this trap in your tours.
my agent, (do not like to mention its name here) offered me a very 'attractive ' plan with a very 'attractive' price at the very beginning, though with some optional programs exclusive in or around Beijing, like visiting to Summer Place, or to Hutong area etc.
After the tour commenced, i began to realize that with the optional programs, i had to pay here and there, and my expenses went up day by day, and my costs is indeed much higher than many all-inclusive tours.
i strongle suggest you ask your agents for prices of all-inclusive tours, DO NOT believe any optional programs, though that makes the cost low, they are only their tricks! If there is any optional programs, we must ask our agent to offer a complete plan and a final price incluing the costs of all those optional programs. We only need to get one price for a COMPLETE package and pay once to our agent.

Shopping in Beijing
By BETH | 4/9/2004 5:32:37 PM
I have a tip about shopping in Beijing. Xiu Shui market is a big market, selling various kinds of goods. If you really find something you like and want to buy, and you can do lots of bargaining for the things we want. The good price for you is to pay 1/2 or 1/3 of the original price.

Tips for great wall travel
By CYNTHIAA | 4/8/2004 5:53:01 PM
I went to Badaling last winter and got something to whsay for those o is going to visit them. Before you begin to climb the steps, there are two flights of steps leading to two totally different sections. The one on your left side is more flat and the other on the right is a little physical demanding. Remember to lower your body when you get down the steps. Beijing is a windy city and you can imagine the wind on top of this ancient fortification. Therefore, wrap yourself up!

The imperial court banquet in Beihai Park is very good and the restaurant is housed in traditional Chinese building. I went there last winter and could not forget the delicious food.
Wangfujing Street is a good place for snacks. The hotel we stayed is quite near the street and we went there at night. Various food made me full! Tip: Remember just taste a very little piece of each, otherwise you will feel full before you get to the end of the row.

Transportation in Bejing for first time visitor to the city
By CYNTHIAA | 4/8/2004 5:16:52 PM
Although it is a modern capital city of China with wide streets and roads, getting around in the city is a big headace. There are too many private cars that the streets are always jammed. It took me one hour for half kilometer by taxi. Metro is a better choice. Tourist buses at Qian Men (Front Gate) can take you to most attractions in the city.

Addicted to Chinese food
By DANIEL | 3/30/2004 10:39:32 AM
arrived in Beijing on Sept. 2001 to study the language. I decided to go as an independent student, rather than with an affiliated program of my university. Though this brought about frequent headaches the first few months, I soon adapted to the Chinese way of Life. I made friends quickly, and they would always invite me out to eat such delicious meals, from Hot Pot (huo guo) to Beijing Roast Duck (kao ya) to Jiaozi (chinese dumplings). I became so addicted to dining out that I took a part time job teaching English to continue this "habit". I enjoyed the walks down various avenues of Beijing and kept trying to practice my chinese with different strangers.
This is a very short message, but I will post another soon. China was an eye-opener for me. I was welcomed with open arms and treated with so much kindness and respect. Go to China and experience for yourself. Feel free to contact for any advice.
