Traffic Jams in Beijing
By GERALDINE | 7/8/2006 4:09:30 PM

Being out of our time zone we woke early each morning that we were in Beijing and headed out in to the streets. Fascinated by the real life of the people we wandered for miles in these early hours and saw things that we would not have otherwise seen! The hardest part for us was not getting hit by cyclists as we tried to cross the street. My natural instinct- with us driving on the left in New Zealand, was to look right before crossing. Many years of programming made this a second nature reflex! But that was my downfall as cyclists flew past me coming from the opposite direction- bells ringing loudly!! At an intersection of four large roads in central Beijing I could not beloeve the sheer number of bikes that were there. Watching enthralled for ages as they wove in and out of each other, bells ringing and motorbikes tooting as they all moved along. The lights did seem to control things to some degree but when the pedestrian light went on the flow of bikes did not seem to stop. We worked out that the best idea was to get a local person on your left shoulder and stick with them all the way across the street, they seemed to know what they were doing. The ebb and flow of the bikes over the next hour was indeed something to see- only one of two buses in the whole time and at least a million and a half bikes!

price rise of Beijing taxi

Taxi price in Beijing has been changed.

The price for each kilometer has become CNY 2 instead of CNY 1.6. Nothing else is changed.

The Great Wall
By MURY | 5/18/2006 5:41:54 AM

Do yourself a favour. Find a guide or someone who respects the great wall and get away from the crowds and experience the quiet and special character of a truely great monument. You cannot help but be moved by the idea of the labour and lives of those that worked on this collosal project over the centuries. BUT - respect it and take care when hiking.

what could be more innocent than students and tea?
By ANAINCHINA | 4/5/2006 6:47:11 AM

Watch out for students who want to practice their english in the Wangfujing area. I went to a tea shop with a young man who claimed to be an English student and wanted to practice (I'm a teacher). An hour & some tea & peanuts later, the waitress brought in a calculator and typed in our bill -- 560 kuai! I knew it was a scam the minute the waitress squeaked "dollar?" The young man was working for the tea house; he would bring foreigners in so they could charge them outrageous amounts. I heard a similar story from some Aussies who were charged 800 RMB (about $100 US) to see a tea ceremonies, again with english students.
I put 40 RMB on the table and walked out, despite the guy's protests that this bill would break his bank account. It was definitely a sketchy situation -- when has a waitress ever brought the bill on a calculator?
I've lived in china for a year and I love it here. Once you get past the belligerent yelling, most chinese are lovely people. Just be careful-- if something seems suspicious, leave!

Shopping: lots to buy but lacking the time?
By NAOMI1970 | 4/4/2006 8:00:00 AM

End of March, I was in Beijing on a business trip for a couple of days. This was my third trip to Beijing, so I had with me a shopping list with clothes, toys for my wife, children and friends. Shopping in Beijing can be a pretty exhausting experience, cause one tends to loose a lot of time finding the right place and bargaining for the right price. On the "Thats Beijing" website I found a Belgian girl that is assisting foreign tourists and business people during their shopping. She has been living in China for a long time, speaks English, French, Dutch and Chinese and, for a small fee, helps you locating the things you want to buy and does the bargaining for you. She picked me up at the hotel at 10AM. She had arranged a driver which brought us to the Yaxiu Market, the Pearl Market and the Silk Museum. I told her what I was looking for, she brought me to the store, let me pick out what I liked and bargained the price for me ( I paid about 25% less of what I paid last time ). The things we bought we left with the driver so we did not have to carry heavy bags with us while shopping. The fee I paid her was less than the money saved due to her bargaining and the shopping a much more pleasant experience. Ilse's mobile mumber is (+86) 13621068731, would you wish to contact her...
