what could be more innocent than students and tea?
By ANAINCHINA | 4/5/2006 6:47:11 AM
Watch out for students who want to practice their english in the Wangfujing area. I went to a tea shop with a young man who claimed to be an English student and wanted to practice (I'm a teacher). An hour & some tea & peanuts later, the waitress brought in a calculator and typed in our bill -- 560 kuai! I knew it was a scam the minute the waitress squeaked "dollar?" The young man was working for the tea house; he would bring foreigners in so they could charge them outrageous amounts. I heard a similar story from some Aussies who were charged 800 RMB (about $100 US) to see a tea ceremonies, again with english students. I put 40 RMB on the table and walked out, despite the guy's protests that this bill would break his bank account. It was definitely a sketchy situation -- when has a waitress ever brought the bill on a calculator? I've lived in china for a year and I love it here. Once you get past the belligerent yelling, most chinese are lovely people. Just be careful-- if something seems suspicious, leave!

Shopping: lots to buy but lacking the time?
By NAOMI1970 | 4/4/2006 8:00:00 AM
End of March, I was in Beijing on a business trip for a couple of days. This was my third trip to Beijing, so I had with me a shopping list with clothes, toys for my wife, children and friends. Shopping in Beijing can be a pretty exhausting experience, cause one tends to loose a lot of time finding the right place and bargaining for the right price. On the "Thats Beijing" website I found a Belgian girl that is assisting foreign tourists and business people during their shopping. She has been living in China for a long time, speaks English, French, Dutch and Chinese and, for a small fee, helps you locating the things you want to buy and does the bargaining for you. She picked me up at the hotel at 10AM. She had arranged a driver which brought us to the Yaxiu Market, the Pearl Market and the Silk Museum. I told her what I was looking for, she brought me to the store, let me pick out what I liked and bargained the price for me ( I paid about 25% less of what I paid last time ). The things we bought we left with the driver so we did not have to carry heavy bags with us while shopping. The fee I paid her was less than the money saved due to her bargaining and the shopping a much more pleasant experience. Ilse's mobile mumber is (+86) 13621068731, would you wish to contact her...

Eating In Beijing
By FLANKER | 2/7/2006 6:46:10 AM
Generally, dinning in Beijing is not so expensive. Beijing has a lot of restaurants which meets consumers' different needs. Roast duck is strongly recommended. The most famous roast duck restaurant is Quanjude, which has a lot of branch stores all over beijing. However, you can always order a roast duck in most medium-sized restaurants in beijing. The cost is around $4-20 per duck depends on different stores. One order can serve 2-4 people, of course you should order other food. For further information, you can contact flanker1118@yahoo.com.cn

About Accommodation in Beijing
By FLANKER | 2/7/2006 6:09:36 AM
Accommodation in Beijing may be tough for you if you want to save money and stay comfortable. One tip is that you may try hotels in universities. You can always get a cheap room, which is also clean and tidy. It costs like $5-20 per room per day. And if you are lucky, you can get a college student as your tour guide, which makes your travel more convenient and eliminates unnecessary troubles. For further information, you can email flanker1118@yahoo.com.cn. May your stay in Beijing happy and comfortable.

About Great Wall
By FLANKER | 2/11/2006 11:42:39 PM
Badaling Great Wall was rebuilt after the establishment of the PRC, therefore, it kind of lacks the natural tasts. Also, it is usually crowded. I strongly recommend the cruise from Jinshanling to Simatai, in which you can take a walk on a 10 kilometer original Great Wall. The whole trip takes 1 day and costs like $10.(Traffic fees not included)I tried it. It's pretty good! If you need further information, please mail flanker1118@yahoo.com.cn, I'll be glad to help. May your stay in China happay and comfortable.
