BEIJING, April 18 (Xinhuanet) -- China launched its largest scale railway speed increase Sunday, adding over 3,500 kilometers of newlines into its express railway network and raising the speeds of its major lines to 160 kilometers per hour.
After this speed increase, China will be running trains on a total of 7,700 kilometers of railway at speeds exceeding 160 kilometers per hour, which will shorten the travel time between some major cities like Beijing and Shanghai.
The speed of freight trains was also raised, which is the firsttime for China to raise the speeds of passenger trains and freighttrains together. The railway's cargo transport capacity will increase 3 percent, said the Ministry of Railways.

Transportation in Bejing for first time visitor to the city
By CYNTHIAA | 4/8/2004 5:16:52 PM
Although it is a modern capital city of China with wide streets and roads, getting around in the city is a big headace. There are too many private cars that the streets are always jammed. It took me one hour for half kilometer by taxi. Metro is a better choice. Tourist buses at Qian Men (Front Gate) can take you to most attractions in the city.
