Haagen Dazs in Guangzhou
By PEPPERMINT | 12/15/2004 12:25:09 PM
You can also taste Haagen Dazs in Taojin Road behind Friendship Shop, opposite to Garden Hotel. Something interesting you will find this shop is more often than not, a whole family instead of a couple would come in. So dont expect to get lost in the romantic atmosphere. Children crying, parents scolding, grandparents laughing will impress you much more than the taste of the ice cream. Anyway, this is why I love this city soooooooooooooo much! Vigorous and novel, it will forever hold something unexpected.

Good places behind Teem Plaza
By PEPPERMINT | 12/15/2004 12:26:17 PM
For anyone going to Teem Plaza, Tianhe, you can have some mediocre food in the 6th floor with mediocre environment and service after your one-stop shopping. However, if you go just a few steps further, you will find some pleasant surprises. Behind Teem Plaza, there are several cafes and shops in the nearby Tianhe Nan community. Xiaoyuan Cafe is Japanese styled. Also good are Moka Cafeand Riluoqiao (Sunsetting Bridge) Cafe I really appreciate the picture in the toilet of Moka Cafe Also, if you will find shops specialized in English or Indian tea, cups and knitting wares. Life works is where I love to linger over. Earl tea with lemon, raspberry, peppermint, passion fruit and other flavors is my favorite. Actually what impresses me most is an ashtray with Snoopy on it but I did not know anyone I can give it to so I curbed my desire to buy it. However, the second time I went there, the Snoopy was gone!Tears! This is also an antique shop. I bought three caskets here but I loved the package even better. The good news is you can use bank cards here. This is really charming!!!

Electronic
By PACO | 11/17/2004 9:52:36 AM
The place where I lived in Shenzhen (my company offered me the apartment) was falling apart and the electrics were really dangerous. But... and there are of course some great apartments there, some people I know had wonderful places.
Be aware of possible dangers with the electrics.

Just Walk :)
By PRONGS | 10/20/2004 10:51:42 AM
Please, if the place is near JUST WALK! It's a good exercise and better than killing your time in the bus because of traffic. Always bring umbrella, even the small one. I remember arguing to my chinese friend to take taxi, I though he just want to save money (even i'm willing to pay for it) but i realized as we are walking (3 blocks! yes its just 3 blocks but around 5KM) the traffic is horrible. Although its hot, my small umbrella is useful! Taking taxi is good but not always, anyone can be caught in a traffic even taxi.

Splendid China at Folk Cultural Village
By PRONGS | 10/20/2004 10:38:18 AM
If your a foreigner, I advice you go to Splendid China at Folk Cultural Village. They are very good educators of Chinese culture and history. You need the whole day (best!) to explore both parks. They are just beside each other and the fee includes both parks(120RMB for non holiday). Go around the Splendid China first (best to do it by walking!) Bring some water and extra food with you cause its expensive inside the park). You will see all the wonderful places of China by place at best miniature sizes. Take lunch inside the park. Souvenirs is super and very expensive! its hard to bargain if your foreigner so let your chinese friend to the trick! After lunch go but the Folk cultural Village presenting different miniorities of China. They offer shows of their culture such as clothes, games and wedding. After the show you can view there houses and then transfer again to another show which is alot. Don't miss the horse fight with Genghis Khan and the most beautiful show inside the theater which is very colorful (This is around 4PM, i think). Try to make a sit in the middle :) The Windows of the WOrld is also beautiful. But I think its a good place for the locals. But as a visitor of China, i preferred the two places above. Have a nice trip!

Crossing the HK/Mainland border
By MRMEACH | 4/18/2004 4:08:40 AM
Travel as light as possible. Whether you cross the border at the Lowu train station or via the routes taken by shuttle buses and taxis, you will be required to handle your luggage a lot. It's a pain.
I've heard good things about the Ferry. It supposedly takes about half the time and isn't so crowded. I'm pretty sure its more expensive but probably not so much more as to be a real concern.
