Yu Yuan

You want to enjoy some amazing shopping and be in one of the most beautiful places in Shanghai? Go to the Yu Yuan. It is a shoppers paradise surrounded by beautiful old Chinese buildings, and a magnificent park.
If you go there take some time to just enjoy the people, smells, and sounds all around you. Most times the Yu Yuan is crowded with shoppers from all over. If you want to buy something there you will have no problem finding it. Just make sure you haggle with the price or you will get ripped off big time.
I love this place, I hope you guys do too!

Hostles

While I was traveling around in China I found that the nicest, cheepest, funnest places to stay were the hostles. There are so many opprotunities to meet many different kinds of people. The hostle that I used the most in China was called the International Youth Hostle. They are clean, their staff know English and are extremely helpful, and best of all, you can find them in most any city you are in. Just go to http://www.iyhf.org/ and you can get directions to hostles in the city you will be in, reserve rooms, and check prices. Its great. I highly recomend them.

General Travel Tips

We visited Shanghai in March 2006 to for a business/pleasure trip attend the East China Fair, and to see the sites in and around Shanghai. We had a most productive visit and a wonderful time. Our stay was made all the beter for 3 main reasons =
1. We hired an interpreter/guide for the entire visit. She met us at the airport, arranged taxi travel to our hotel and basically made sure everything we needed was taken care of.
We found her by placing an AD online. The cost was very reasonable and the service she provided was even better.
2. Through our interpreter we also hired a car & driver for the week. This made traveling around the city and to our factory visits very easy.
3. We stayed at a 1st Class hotel. The Shanghai Rennisance. The hotel staff spoke English and the accomedations and restaurants were all very nice.
We look forward to returning to China again next year.

Reasonable Hotel in Shanghai

I recently stayed in Jinjiang Inn Shanghai by the Bund, Shanghai, China.
Their address: 33 Fujian Rd(s), The Bund, Shanghai
Really well located in the Bund only 15 mins walk from the river and from Yuyuan Gardens area.
The staff are friendly, speak good English and can help with directions and information.
We paid 120RMB each for a twin room. It is large, clean and very comfortable. Excellent ensuite. I wouldn't usually pay this much, but I recommend it if there are 2 of you.
I have nothing bad to say about them! A great stay.

Jinmao

Jinmao Tower
After 6pm as the city is lighting up, the tower is just 50 RMB, (OCT 2006) compared to Harbin's Dragon Tower at 90 RMB (Rip Off)and is a great way to see the city, a modern marvel. If just to see the inside of the world's highest hotel, stunning design!
All the usual souvenirs,post cards and drinks available.

Nanjing Lu

Yes just you boys, I'm sure you're clued up on travel safety but I'll say this anyway...
......NANJING LU.......
Do NOT accept any invitation to a bar or coffee shop from young women, or even men nowadays, to help them with English, French or any language, study, thesis etc unless you want to pay anywhere between 500-3000RMB for the pleasure of a whisky!
It's not illegal as the prices are displayed, and the bar will deny all knowledge of your 'friends' association with them, they send in the heavies if you refuse, luckily as I'm in a relationship I never get approached but my colleague had 300 conned in this very way, and stories abound about many more cases! Be wise!
The most infamous cafe is above a jewelers.
Think about it, if they are genuine students they'll happily accept a Starbucks or McD coffee!

Booking train ticket in Shanghai

Booking a ticket was easier than I had thought. I wanted to book train tickets to go to Beijing from Shanghai. If you need to do the same, then go to Shanghai railway station. You can reach there by taking Metro line 1, 3 or 4. There is a station by the same name. I dont exactly remember the exit which leads to the ticket booking office. But when you come out of that exit, you will see the booking office (Thank God !! the board is written in English) on your left, across the road. Unfortunately most of the information inside is in Chinese. Thus I decided to go to a ticket window and started explaining my requirement (which I had written on a paper in English and had the same translated in Chinese with the help of my hotel front desk). The lady on the other side of the window couldnt communicate in English and thus she called one of her colleagues and surprise surprise !! She was able to speak English and told me that there are no hard sleeper coaches on the 'T' train. Thus I bought tickets on the 'Z' category trains which have soft sleeper coaches and are most modern. I have seen some snaps on the internet and the interior is really nice. And buying a ticket is similar to buying a movie ticket. Just tell the number of passengers, date of travel and 'From' and 'To' stations.
Thats it !! Buying a train ticket in Shanghai is that easy. Enjoy !!

Nanjing Road?

I am always curious why everybody mention Nanjing Road when they talk about Shanghai. In 1900s, it was the most fashionable place in Shanghai, while now, out of time. only left those shop signs. almost all the guys walked on that road come from other places than Shanghai. that's why you are easy to meet with those terrible things. you needn't consider about safe when walking on Huaihai Road, Xujiahui or Xintiandi. those are the places now represent modern Shanghai. you may also enjoy the beautiful night along the river on the riverside promenade, just forget the west bund sightseeing tunnel. why not come to Duolun Road if you are interested in Shanghai culture. there are residence of famous persons. so many places you can go. if you really want to see Nanjing Road, have A look is enough, just check the shop signs, maybe different from those on your book.
