Bin Yuan Service Apartments for Budget Biz
By DPLEE089 | 6/5/2005 11:49:44 AM

The Bin Yuan service apartments are several floors of the back side of the Heng Sheng Peninsula (sp?) Hotel on the corner of Wusong and Wuchang rd. If you need high speed internet, washing machine, kitchen, etc., good view of Shanghai and would like to be near the Bund (10 minutes walk), check it out.
Go thru the Heng Sheng reception elevator area and take two rights until you come to the back elevator. Go to the reception on the 16th floor. Prices are from 45/65 night with 3 room sizes. The rooms are relatively clean and service is friendly and helpful. There are 7/11s, nice restaurants within a block or two. You can stay for a few days or a few weeks. This is my 3rd stay here.

Shanghai Old Quarter
By ELCABRON | 2/21/2005 12:41:57 AM

A must see in Shanghai is certainly the Old Town of Shanghai. And I am not talking about the the new tourist traps built close around the YuYuan Garden, where only strange souvenirs are offered. Skip that and check the narrow alleys surroundung it. Streets with houses not higher than two storeys, no sewer system except the cans in front of the doors in the morning and washed clothes hanging over the streets from one house to another. This is the last part of the true old city. There are no tourist shops but busy Chinese shops, street kitchens and market alleys, where Chinese people shop. Everything is vivid and relaxed at the same time, because there are no cars, no modern progress disturbing the scenery.
But steel and concrete is already at the gates! Skyscrapers are coming closer each time I get to Shanghai.
I hope that even dispite the missing luxury of modern living that some people might miss, some parts get protected like the Hutongs in Beijing.

The highest Bar in Town!
By ELCABRON | 2/20/2005 11:32:02 PM

If you like to enjoy your drinks along with the best view over the city of Shanghai, try CLOUD 9 of the JinMao Tower. The way up is a little bit confusing because compared to the view platform you have to change the lift at least twice. Sometimes you have to wait for a seat and prices are not the cheapest - but the view is worth it!

Street Laptop seller in Shanghai
By PRVNK | 2/20/2005 7:47:34 PM

Be careful if a street vendor tries to sell you a high end Laptop for very low unbelievable price! It will be rigged and the system information will be manipulated to show it as a high end system. Applies to cameras, watches etc

places to stay in Shanghai
By ELCABRON | 2/20/2005 6:57:27 PM

Cheap one:

Captain YH on Fuzhou Lu No. 37 which is right at the Bund situated in a colonial building. www.captainhostel.com, phone (21)-63219331. You can see the Pearl Tower from the window! In 2003 they charged 55 kuai for dormitory, around New Year 04/05 they asked for 60.
Showers and toilets are in western style, a washing machine is waiting for you.

Best one:

PU JIANG or ASTOR HOUSE on Huang Pu Lu No. 15 (the end or beginning of the Bund). WWW.Pujianghotel.com or www.astorhouse.com,
phone: (21)-63246388.
It is the pure rich colonial style! Supposed to be the first and oldest hotel of Shanghai. People like Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, Bertrand Russell and US President Grant stayed here. I stayed in a 45 qm doubleroom with beautiful old wood floor, 3 meter and something high ceiling with old stucco works and so on for 380 Yuan (16 Euros per person). It is the cheaper version of the Peace Hotel - with a great quality!

But if you are 100 per cent backpacker you can also enjoy this atmosphere at the Astor House for 70 Kuai in dormitory.

The picture shows the Astor House at snowfall.

Cheap accommodation
By LANGLANG | 2/12/2005 8:27:55 PM

Yes, Shanghai is EXPENSIVE, especially if you want cheap accommodation. But I've managed to get accommodation for 50Yuan after some hunting around. You have to be PATIENT and ask lots of people. My boyfriend and I are buget buget travellers, so we never ever look at the guide books for advice on lodgings 'cause we always know they'll be expensive, even when the book says it's cheap. But honestly, if you want something that's CLEAN, you'll probably have to fork up the extra money. Minimum 100Yuan. But I didn't mind as long as the bedsheets were new. There are people on the trains who help with lodging as well, and they don't care about charging extra for foreigners ( at least not in my experience ). Stay away from YMCA if you can. They're like the a 5 star hostel, but with 5 star prices. Not worth it when there are equally good accommodation around for cheaper. Hope this helps.

Bai Le Men Hotel
By DAVIDCOCKRELL | 2/6/2005 9:42:34 AM

This hotel in downtown Shanghai has the advantage of being close to everything, including the Buddhist Temple across the street. Unfortunately, the rooms are old and the nightly rate is very high, about USD 80, and I did not feel the service was very good.

Yu Gardens in Shanghai
By DAVIDCOCKRELL | 2/6/2005 9:36:18 AM

Yu Gardens in Shanghai is a MUST to see! The old style architecture combined with the rock trails, landscaping and exhibits of Old China give one a sense of travelling back in time to days gone by. This is truly a spot you do not want to miss!
