Ella Fitzgerald is in the house. At least her picture is and a bunch of music from that era. The owners here have a love of listening to jazz, dancing to Latino and have a good, loyal group of customers giving the three-story bar/cafe an air of familiarity. They also have the biggest humidor in Zhejiang province stocked straight out of Cuba. Live music. Food available.
Paradise Bar/Restaurant 天上人间

Madame Zhao is spinning her web again and starting some parties. She, if anyone, should know how it’s done. There were probably more beers sold here in 1999 than in Nauru. They also do a mean burger that many claim to be the town’s best.
Reggae Bar 黑根酒吧

You often hear people complain about service not being personal enough and about places lacking loyal clientele. They aren’t talking about Reggae Bar. It’s not high-class, not Remy Martin-y, but sometimes that’s not what you want. We’ve heard people from 20-50 years old claim it’s their favorite place. Food and cool tunes available.

Joy’s Pub 爵色酒吧

Joy’s is a busy, noisy boisterous bar that’ll remind you why you’re still in Hangzhou. Many of the revelers are regulars, and that is not surprising as the music, directed by the famous A Yong, covers a broad range coming from Europe, US and parts of China. Beers are not so cheap, but bottles of liquor are a steal. Go any day of the week to see a busy bar party.
JZ Club 黄楼

Zhang Zheng and his gang have really made this old house comfortable. The sound system is clear, you can talk to your tablemates, the drink variety is wide, it’s very warm, and the menu has cheap stuff for those of us without the deepest pockets. Did we mention the live jazz? Italian food available.
Maya Bar 玛雅酒吧

When you want a place where the laughter is louder than the music, Maya’s your spot. There, you get a range of the young and the old, the rich and the poor. Though not exactly new, it’s tidy enough so that you don’t have to worry about getting your white pants dirty. Who wears white pants anyway? Strong drinks keep a loyal group of regulars, but it’s still inclusive to the lone newcomer. Great place to start off an evening. Food available.

If you’re looking for a place to just chill, this is it. There are good tunes on the iPod, and they serve up some nice snacks. Try the shrimp on the barby – delish! And if those aren’t reasons enough to drag your ass down there, you’ve got the tall glasses of ice cold Franziskaner Weiss beer. Definitely one of the coolest places in town.
Common's Place 凡人咖啡馆
1 Wanshouting Street (Opposite the Radisson Hotel),万寿亭街1号(雷迪森酒店对面), 11am - 2am, 85062166
In this little place just near the Radisson, it always feels like it's crowded. And if you are there alone, there is no need to worry because the bartenders always help out and make nice introductions. The Tijuana/Forbidden City design is not ordinary but comfortable.

Nanjing, Hangzhou are incredibly hot and humid in late June, and I understand July and August also. Take plenty of towlettes (wash and dry) with you to help keep you cool. I carried a hand fan also and used it. Finding cool, bottled ice tea is not hard to find, but also carry water with you and drink it. The hotels we were in were air-conditioned, but sometimes not very much. Occasionaly we got a cool taxi, and that was a real relief after a hot, humid walk...and most of the sites have extensive walking.

The best time to visit Hangzhou

The best time to vist Hangzhou is spring, when the plum and cheery blossoms are in full bloom, from end Feb to early April. It is beautiful in the lake area!!

Dragons Well - Fake or Real?

It is very likely that if you are with a tour group or hired a taxi to see Hangzhou, you'd be taken to the Loongjing Village (Dragons Well Village) where there lies a little well (size of a bucket)next to the road and they would call it the Dragons Well. That is NOT the Dragons Well!!!!!!!!!
Most tourist are taken there so the villagers there can have some kind of business. The real Dragons Well is now protected by the Government and you have to pay to get in and it is only located 5 mins away from the fake one. There are two ways to go to the village, either way if you continue on the road you will see a wooden gateway spanning across the road. You might pass the fake well first if you are coming up the hill from one side and you would completely miss the fake well if you take the other but you will see the wooden gateway. Either way you will need to go thru the gate and the road goes down hill and then take the first turning on the right and continue until it is a dead end then the Old Dragons Well graden is right there in front of you. If in doubt, you can find the first tea shop on the right immediately after the wooden gateway. The owner is an official of the protected garden and he will show you the way. His name is Mr Chik. "More" in Hangzhou

One of the best things to do on arrival to Hangzhou is to head for Paradise Cafe located on Hubin Road right next to West Lake. Here you will be able to get your bearings while you sip a cup of coffee out on the patio and have a read of Hangzhou's "More" Magazine. Inside you will find tips on where to eat, shop and what to see. Picking up one of these FREE Mags will make a tour plan of the city simple, and the handy map inside will help direct you.

bus station in hangzhou

The cab drivers at the Hangzhou bus station are like vultures. I was surrounded by 4 of them as son as I got out the door. The quoted me 300 yuan for a ride to west lake. When I refuted, they dropped the price to 200 yuan. It's best to have travels from the bus station pre-arranged (if possible) before you arrive there.
