To PEACOCK: I like the ones mevtioned before: Suzhou River Blind Shaft Chongqing Express 2046 In the mood for love Huazhe (or Life from Zhang Yimou) and of course all the typical "action" movies like: Tiger and Dragon Hero House of the flying daggers Do you have some more recommendations? |

To Elcabron: I really have other Chinese movies to recommend, but now I cannot remember their English names. Please give me sometime, OK? I have to say sorry here!!!! To Gaz: The very thing touched me most in the movie Brave Heart is a kind of spirit of the hero, not about the history it concerns. His bravery, selfishlessness and deep sense of responsibility. Also the pure love in that movie impressed me very much. So don't worry!

To California: I have heard of the movie: 那山, 那人,那狗. It is said that there are only a few words in this movie, which is considered very special and really successful. I do want to see it in the near future. In addition the main male actor is my semi-townfellow.

Some people say that there is one over-riding theme in the movies of any culture. Some say that Japanese movies, be it comedy or romance or horror or drama or whatever, all have one inherent and constant theme: the things that cannot be said directly but only felt. Korean films, on the other hand, express a charasmatic search for identity. American films betray a desire to display one's power. These are just the opinions of some commentators, and there are other interpretations. So what's the main theme all the way through China's movies? Sometimes I think it's the consciousness of 'burden' - which is why so many have sad endings. Even in comedy, I still get the feeling that 'it's hard being Chinese'. Anyone have any other ideas?

To QQSTAR: Yes, I agree with you. Although Chinese people have had made some achievements, still it is long way to go. To MISHEN: I have to admit that you do have a deep thought of Chinese movies. While I think the themes of Chinese movies are mostly concerning the responsibility and morality, no matter in tragedy or in comedy. Sometimes after watching a certain or some films, you may feel that being a Chinese is hard. I think that's because a Chinese is not only responsible for himself or herself, meanwhile he or she must be liable for others. This may seem ridiculous or unbelievable for western people, but it is an essential part of Chinese virtue, really.
