Im surprised by all the answers of Chinese members here, it seems that Braveheart has a bigger impact than hundreds of Chinese movies;-)

Really nice!

Hey, Elcabron, you needn't feel surprised by the answers. Each movie, no matter Chinese one or Hollywood one, has its own uniqueness. The fact that we mention Braveheart and talk about its great impact on us dosen't mean that it has more impact than other Chinese ones. It is just our topic, that's all.
For the movie you mentioned, I haven't seen it. But I have heard of it and really love the leading actor and actress.

It seems become a trendence that each new made Chinese movie first show in abroad or in some movie festivals to win the prize or reputation ,then show up in China .
It's very curious that the movie is not for its good reputation to win the prize ,but for the prize to win the reputation.

To CONNY:

I hope the reason for winning prizes is the CONTENT (and not the budget and promotion), and with a good content and maybe a prize a small movie (like most low budget movies from China) get attention even despite having no big commercial buget like those Hollywood blockbusters with over 100 million USD and promotion one year ahead. Movies like star wars or lord of the rings were promoted at least a year before they got to the cinemas....

Oh, and if the content is too good (too realistic) the movie gets rated and forbidden by the Chinese government and never makes it back into Chinese cinemas;-) Because the attention attracts them, too!

To this topic:

Someone announced the huge impact and status of Chinese movies.....the funny thing is no Chinese member could recommend any Chinese movies...instead only Hollywood movies.
So the Chinese movies have even no impact on Chinese...
But I read statistics which said that in cn cinemas cn movies had more success than foreign movies.
Maybe this is just because most people prefer the cheaper dvd copy of foreign movies from the streets than watching it in the cinema:-)

To Elcabron: The fact is that I praised you in a post reply just one minute ago. But now I cannot agree with you. There are many members having recommended Chinese movies already, so I think you haven't followed the whole discussion yet. Well, I will give you a small list of Chinese movies:
In a mood for Love
2046
In the time of ashes
Farewell, my concubine
Red lantern
A Chinese ghost story
Crouching tiger, hidden dragon
Hero
………………………… many many other ^_^

To Elcabron: To be frank I really have seen a number of Chinese movies. But unfortunately I don't all their English names. Maybe the other day I can provide you more information, ok?
To Conny: You needn't feel ashamed, really, because you must know them if I tell you the Chinese version. I guess you are a movie fan, aren't you?

Chinese movies have already had a status in the international film field ?you agree??

“Good morning. Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft will here join us from all of the world. And you will be launching for a largest battle of the history of mankind.
Mankind, that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences any more.we will be united in our common interests. You will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression or persecution. But from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live, to exist. As the day when the world declared in one voice. We will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight. We're going to live on. We're going to survive. Today we celebrate our independence day!”
------------------------<<The Independence Day>>

Chinese movies have a long way to go, not only a long way, but also a way filled with difficulties and obstacles. Here I should point out that the Chinese movies just confine in mainland, excluding Hongkong and Taiwan.
In order to get a deep understanding of the situation of Chinese movies, let’s make acontrast.
1、 technology\technique
it’s very sad to accept the fact that Chinese movie technology is laggard. In 2000, most Chinese knew the movie called <<rescue in the polar region>>(staring: Hu Bing& Karen Mok《极地营救》), which was defined as “the Chinese first tech-movie”. Then, what happened? No one paid attention on it -------- most thought the director who used various computer technologies just wanted to create a junk.
Why ? why did it fail to capture the eyesight of Chinese? Only one word-----fake. Chinese movie technology is immature.
