I'm not sure that buses will be more convenient. There are plenty of trains every day between Shanghai and Hangzhou. It takes about 2 hours to get there. I don't know if buses will be faster. I've done the trip 2 times and it never occured to me to take a bus, because trains are so convenient.

There are buses every 30 or 40 mimutes between hangzhou and Shanghai and I think buses are more convinient and comfortable.
But taking trains would be cheaper of course and actually I think taking trains is not bad if you have time...

It seems indeed there are plenty of buses from Shanghai to Hangzhou, departing from various places (try long distance bus station at shanghai stadium for example, but there are many more, there are even direct buses to Hangzhou from the 2 airports). Time is about the same as with the train : approx. 2 hours, as long as there are not too many traffic jams ;-). Price is higher than the train, should be around 50-70 RMB. Your choice : depends which one you like more : bus or train.

I only found one train time listed on the train schedule site I found and it was 03:33 which is why I thought the bus might be better.

I think both bus and train take same time, but I would like to find a morning one to Hangzhou from Shanghai and late afternoon one back to Shanghai. I can't find a time table. Obviously I also want to know which station I will need to go to.

Thanks for all the information.

hmmm, there is definitely more than 1 train from shanghai to hangzhou
I also had a good website, but it's not working very well right now. Maybe you can try : http://www.ctrip.com/supermarket/train/trainsearch_1.asp but for this one you must be able to read chinese characters.
I did the search for you (there are 2 stations in Hangzhou : central en east, but from both of them it's fairly easy to get to the center):
K809 to Hangzhou east 7:21 - 9:46
K111 to Hangzhou east 9:10 - 11:40
K175 to Hangzhou east 10:00 - 12:18
These are from Shanghai Central station. There are also trains from Shanghai South and Shanghai West station to Hangzhou.
Back Hangzhou-Shanghai :
K176 Hangzhou east to Shanghai 16:03 - 18:22
K810 Hangzhou to Shanghai 17:36 - 19:58
K182 Hangzhou east to Shanghai 18:33 - 20:57

Hope it helps

Now I can make reservations for accommodations in Hangzhou knowing how many nights as I know when I can arrive.

One last question if you know. I heard there may be some type of transportation directly to the airport. I was looking for the early time back to Shanghai as it would be going to the airport upon returning to Shanghai. But if there is something from Hangzhou to the airport I wouldn't need to return to Shanghai and get to the airport from there.

Thanks so very, very much.

Depends which airport you mean : Pudong or Hongqiao ?
As far as I know there are direct buses from both airports to Hangzhou and back. If you arrive at the airport, that would definitely be the best solution. There should be buses every 2 hours or so, but I don't know the exact schedule. Best is to ask in the airport when you arrive.
