We do know chinese...though..shyly speaking..have not used for ages...that's why...getting kids to china for 2-weeks to surround them with chinese environment 24/7. Well...thanks for railway info. wanted to stay at Xian Diamond international hotel. cheapest hotel @US$50 per room per night. |

Hi there, those prices are one-way, of course. China is cheap but not crazy;-) You said you want to backpack and it sounds like money is a major factor for your travels(as it is for everyone), so why dont you stay in hostels? You get the real backpacker feeling plus it is much cheaper. 5USD per person in Xian right at the old city wall at the southgate is a great option. Good quality for cheap money.

You guys are great with info. Really need all the help we can get. Sorry. We thought that US$50 was about the cheapest we could do for accomodation..esp..with two young kids. I guess you're right...will psyche them up to stay in a hostel instead. Save money! haha. @first..I'm only afraid that safety is an issue..but I guess my fears are unfounded! Must learn to relax and go with the flow...something our people do not do very well. haha. thanks for the help. If needs be, will trouble you again??? ok??

you guys think..3 days are enough to cover most of the spots in Xian? Should we go ahead and purchase two-way TRAIN tickets BEI-XIAN-BEI or wait til we get to xian to buy return trip to BEIJING? Is it true that we could actually travel public buses to sights without fuss?

I'd recommend getting the overnight Z trains (417/400 RMB each for soft sleeper lower/upper bunk, very comfy!) instead of flying, and buy your return tickets in advance in Beijing as well. The Z19 goes from Beijing to Xi'an and the Z20 goes from Xi'an to Beijing. Xi'an train station is very chaotic and you won't want to be trying to buy your return tickets there. Beijing and Xi'an are very well-touristed and you won't need guides if you understand Chinese. It gets dark from about 5 pm onwards. If you'd like to stay around the Bell Tower in Xi'an, I've had friends stay at the Shaanxi Wenyuan Hotel recently and they were all very satisfied with it. A double/twin will cost 230 RMB each (online booking). As for Beijing near the train station, a lot of travellers also recommend the City Central Youth Hostel.
