Beihai is a nice city but Silver Beach is just so so. Yangshuo wins my vote for the abundance of English speakers, the casual lifestyle and the beautiful countryside.

Bobert, yes, i admit yangshuo is a wonderful place. my US foreign teacher once said to me "trvelling in gulin is the most beautiful experience when he was in china". However, when winter is coming, guilin becomes very cold. and in spring, it is always rainy and clod i can't put up with that. in contrast, most of time, beihai is fine, nine months of a year are proper to swim. even though,it is a headache beihai is extremly hot in summer, i lstill like beihai very much,. i like the sea a i lke desert, besides, beihai is the place where i grew up. i like the life style there, enjoying fishing along the sea in the countryside, riding a motocycle through the small city in the evening, shopping and eating many snacks with firends at night etc.

I can't question your logic ChaiChai but I do question your objectivity. Naturally you are predjudiced in favor of Beihai because you grew up there. If I were suggesting the best place to live in Australia I would probabaly also choose my home town.

As a foreigener, my personal requirememts for a place to live differ vastly from yours as a local. The ability to freely communicate takes precedence above all others. The appalling winter weather aside, Yangshuo suits most needs of a foreigner including language. I really enjoyed the city of Beihai, especially the "old town", but I was disapointed in the local beach. Of course coming from a country with a 25,000 kilometer coastline I am spoiled for beaches and more discerning. We will just have to agree to disagree on this one,

Haha, yeah, what you said is right. I have prejudice. To get rid of my favor, just be justic, as to chinese, Beihai is a nice city to live. it has proper climate comfortable resident surroundings.
I should say you have prejudice too. You always can see the sea sights in your life so you prefer to live in a different place where has beautiful natures like river, mountians etc. yes, Yangshuo is a wonderful place to foreigners. A nice place for chinese to travel. but to most chinese people, when they choose a place to live, they will consider a lot, like the price of house, the transportation, anything they will care.
Annway, everyone has different favors. Some like countryside, some like the sea, some like modern city. To live a place he or she like very much, he or she will think that is the best city.

We are both prejudice and understandably so. You are right to say we all want what we don't already have. I'm sure Behai is a wonderful place to live but I doubt it would suit me. Selecting "the best place to live in China" is unavoidably very subjective. There are many variables involved in that selection process and they depend on your individual personal requirements as you pointed out. Age, work status, personality, income etc etc are all vital components of that choice. Yangshuo is a popular retirement town for many older Chinese but it wouldn't suit everyones needs. Maybe it would suit some foreigners but naturally not all. Maybe it wouldn't suit me either but I'm yet to find a city that definately does so Yangshuo still gets my vote.

I would choose Haikou in Hainan as it does not get really cold, it is full of character, is somewhat laid back, has a few expats but not too many and is not full of tourists like Sanya. Yangshou is full of English speakers it is true, but whose English is mainly related to selling overpriced products. It is also cold enough to freeze thge b...s of a brass monkey in winter.

I found Haikou more of a busy business city than residential unlike Beihai. Beihai has a redevelped "old town" section and some beautiful tree lined streets ideal for residential, I found little charachter in Haikou. I also had trouble finding anyone to talk to as I did in Sanya which has a huge Russian influence. Maybe I am just not looking in the right places. I agree the weather in Yangshuo is a deterrent and it is grossly over commercialised but for me it still has a certain charm. A stroll along the Li River will reveals hoards of English students eager to practice their English on any subject without a thought of a sale of any kind.

Of course there's no definitive answer to this question and that's the reason we are all still travelling.

GUEST35115 I had the same problem with my wife. We were married for 4 years, she was turned down for a visa 4 times. The embassy always asked for something knew and different every time she went for a interview. So after 4 years of waiting I went to China and taught English in Shaoxing. But she only stayed with me for 3 weeks and went back to her home town in northern China. Now I am getting a divorce since I met another who really cares about me. We will live in her home town of Xian. Good Luck

GUEST28185 I was thinking of moving to china in about a year. What would be a nice place to live but also not to expensive?
