 | I've been in this lovely city for over 2 years, so I decided to make some contribution to this city:)), I mean I will popularize Xian Hua against the promotion of Putonghua(mandarin) by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. (haha) Just kidding! Well, I tried to work out a set of rules of speaking Xian hua on the basis of Putonghua (mandarin). Trust me, it's easy. I am sure all the Chinese members in this forum speak common Putonghua, and some foreign members, as far as I know, speak perfect Putonghua and/ or Dongbeihua or Shandonghua:)), so you can speak Xianhua. Think about it, next time you come to Xian and order Yang Rou Mao Mo in Xianhua, the waitress will be scared!! |

| You know, there are four tones + light tone in Putonghua, and the difference between Putonghua and Xianhua are the difference on tones. There are exceptions - it seems everything has exceptions, the exceptions are different expressions/words on the same things, examples like: Putonghua(P for short): Xianhua(X for short) P: 小孩-xiaohair (child, children, kid/s...) X: 娃-wa P: 饼-bing、馒头-mantou (cakes, steamed bun), etc X: 馍mo P: 好极了-haojile (great) X: 嘹咋咧-liaozalie :-) ... ... |

Xianhua, Change of tones: Putonghua ----> Xianhua 3rd tone ----> 1st tone 4th tone ----> /3rd tone or \1st tone 2nd tone ---->/1st tone or \ unchange 1st tone ----> 3rd tone It seems there is no 4th tone in Xianhua, well, there is, that happens on one word sentence, I guess. |

| Oh, it's like I am teaching fish to swim and at present (noon time at Sunday), no local people around me that can offer some assistance. But I hope I can 抛砖引玉, there must be a lot of revisions and amendments offered by authorities of Xianhua. |

| When I was in Xi'an they taught me a word for 'hurry up' which sounded something like 'kalimatcha' - do you know what that expression actually is? |

| Exactly, kalimatcha is just like most colliqual words of saying "hurry up", they are short and brief. Kalimatcha is long? NO, it is a four-letter expression - something like 咔利麻察:-), every of these four letters is pronounced very short and brief - like what it means(hurry up). Another expression for "Hurry up" is "malixie" - 麻利些！ I don't think kalimatcha or 咔利麻察 has any actually meaning, it's so colliqual that there is no written form in documents of any kind. It's been taking very long time to take shape. |

| I tried to use phonetic symbols but the system in this forum does not support:(. 我wo = I, me pronounced in Xianhua like the sound made by ng+er in English, 4th tone. |

| Putonghua vs Xianhua: 说shuo 1st tone ----> she anything else? -------------------------------------- Is it also Xianhua to pronounce “说,shuo in pinyin”like "feh"? |
