Hi Folks,
Ive been looking around here and gathering lots of good advice but now have some questions.
I and some friends (about 20 of us) - young middle aged Europeans are planning an April Visit to China. We are all pretty active and enjoy hiking/biking/rafting, great scenery as well as good food :)
We have all travelled a fair bit and try to avoid big groups, hawkers etc and are looking for some authentic experiences of China. Some have already visited China and want another taste. We are pretty much into ecotourism and avoid package tourism as much as possible. What we are looking to do is avoid the big crowds/groups and sellers etc. We try to blend - yeah I know thats hard for us :) We are looking to do some of the obvious like hiking on the "wild great wall" and then down to Yangshou for some lovely water/river scenes and then some workout on rafting, bikes and maybe rock-climbing and of course the great food.
We have also been looking at Jiuzhaigou to take in some of the stunning lake scenery. But we are concerned about how busy it is (it seems like it gets real busy) and that we may not be able to do much other than soak up the scenery. Is there anywhere for riding/rafting there and is it just tooo busy and commercialised???
We dont need to do cheap accomodation and can fly between cities/legs to save time. If someone can give some feedback on these places OR make some other suggestions on places to go that have something special without big crowds I'd be very grateful.
We are looking for that something special - so if someone can give some feedback on these places OR make some other suggestions on places to go at that time of year I'd be very grateful.

Thanks heaps in advance.
Keep well.

April is the best time to travel in China , now that you wish to have something natural and special ,why not take Guilin and Yangshuo in consideration ?

Hi Conny,
Thanks for that. We would pass through Guilin to Yangshou-have been told most activities are there- apart from river and scenes etc. We understand that Yangshou has great scenery and is quieter. There are so many great places - we are trying to be picky and get the best for our short trip of about 10 days :)

Tibet is also a very good place for your consideration. It is a holy place. There are a great number of lakes, such as Lake Manasarova, Yamdrok Yumtso Lake, Heavely Lake Namtso, moutains, like Mt. Kailash, Mt. Everest, and so on.

They are amazing and will not disappoint you. :)

Would you be at all interested in hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge? It is a bit dangerous but it is soooo beautiful. If your groups ends up going to Yunnan, you should really consider going to the Gorge....such a sight!

For riding,I recommend Inner Mongolian Grassland, and the best one named Hulunbeir! The whole place was amazing, you can ride horse on the grassland, and visit the colorful forest parks! Some minorities places......

Another good place was named Arshan,so exciting!

For hiking,I agree with mindy, and you can go to Nu River valley, and Tiger leaping gorge......

I'd like to recommend Sanya, the only tropical paradise in China. It is said that it's the EASTERN HAWAII in China, also the place for MISS WORLD pageant for 3 times. Want to know more about Sanya, pls take a look at www.chinasanya.com.

bty, April is a good time for visiting Sanya.

Thanks guys, thas really helpful. Yes we had considered Tiger Leaping - and thats also high on the list - we are just trying to squeeze at least 2 - 3 top spots in and still do lots - who said we were resting? :)
By the time we land - get to Beijing and do the wall and head off, Tibet may run out of time? cos we still want to be greedy and get at least 2 spots in :)
Next time we will have to arrange more time off work. Mongolia sounds fantastic and I guess we could do something short, the Tibet area may need to wait till we can dedicate more time to it - unless you think it can be squeezed in?
I will check out the connections etc and see what we can do.
Any more thoughts on Yunnan & the Kunming/Lijiang areas? Any other suggestions ?
Come on - you guys know the best places :)
Thanks
Keep well

In Beijing,if you want visit the Great Wall, and I suggest Jiankou Great Wall, and it is a rural one!

For Yunnan,I think Kunming,Dali and Lijiang are MUST SEE places, and maybe more tourists go there!I suggest that Yuanyang,Tengchong,Baoshan,Ruili and Liuku are all amazing places,if you can,pls try to do it!

Good luck!
