ok absolutely ridiculous question, BUT how on earth do you use
chopsticks - there appears to be some kind secret art to this
technique, which as of yet i have failed to master! any hot tips or
advice greatly appreciated - at the moment i am practising and
practising, and kind of getting there, but its not smooth technique
and i would like to improve asap!

Thanks guys, hope your not laughing too much at my lack of skill!

As Wocca said: years ago I was a 'stabber' too.

However beware of food with sauces using this technique!

I have found you a photo online that illustrates how to use them.

Yep i am at the 'stabbing' stage of things! tricky with that sauce
though! oh well shall just have to breathe in the aromas of all
things sauce-like, or risk a faux-paus-ed slurp from bowls!

thanks for the pics! surprisingly helpful!

Why do westerners want to learn to use the chopsticks? They should asked for forks and spoons when they dine out. I find it easier to eat with forks and spoons. Forget about chopsticks!! The chinese learn to eat with chopsticks at the age 2.

Twenty years ago in the West it was only
'fashionable' to eat with chopsticks when one went out for Chinese food.

Now, there is a huge amount of different Asian cuisine here and it is normal to eat with them.

I notice that you eat slower and enjoy the meal more. If you eat sushi here with a fork, people look at you as if you are crazy.

I didn't remember how I learned using chopsticks, I was too young :-). I mastered the skill even earlier than my two year older sister. My parents told me later that my sister had used a spoon for quite a long time before I could hold one, when I was old enough to be 'privileged ' using a beautiful shining spoon, my sister robbed my new spoon away and gave a 'second-hand' spoon to me! Then i started using chopsticks, and quite well, even today, I often tease my sister for her poor skill of using chopsticks.:-)

Dear Maz, if you want to learn chopsticks quite soon, never put other tools except chopsticks.

Good luck!

Sorry, I missed "on your table" in my last sentence.

Well, when chopsticks are not just optional, but the only choice, you will master the skill pretty fast. :-)

Why should Westerners use chopsticks? Why not? It's fun... and then, it just becomes quite normal

When I was in primary school in Heilongjiang, we had a neighbour who had two boys, their mother was always criticizing them for misbehaviors during dinner time, and usually she beat the boys with chopsticks while scolding them, can you imagine if she used a knife instead of chopsticks? :-)

That's another usage of chopstickes you guys have not found. lol
