When I go out with my boyfriend, he prefers to pay for the bill. But I don't think he MUST pay. I also pay for the bill sometimes.
If I go out with other guys and gals, we generally go Dutch. Or, I pay for my friend this time, and she will pay for me next time.

The Chinese saying, 礼尚往来(courtesy demands reciprocity), can also be used in this situation.

i see no difficulty why girls can initiate a date? it is when girls wait for gals to date them that is why they are always not getting dates. seriously some guys are shy too, you know? so girls can also be proactive in going out on a date or repeat dates...

hi ,5566, you'd better clear it in advance ,otherwise the girl would deem that you'll pay the bill

ETHNICEAST, how do you avoid the 'aunty' situation or do you have suggestions to be alert for these kind of ladies?

i think there are 3 possible scenarios;
1. local girl's heart is responding, so invite aunties to join in to size up the gal and let them have free meal.
2. local girl's heart not interested(maybe too old or too young) but felt that the guy is good so invite other aunties or girls to come around and see whether any of them like him.
3. local girl just want to show off that she has a spendable guy to pay for her indulgence, so always invite aunties and girlfriends.
maybe there are other scenarios...i guess, i not local.

but better to make date as though have something to discuss like work or business or something, in case the "dating" dont work out.

Chinese students go dutch all the time. It is a rule for them.
