| I am not sure why I am having to defend myself over a word which is not spelled correctly, to one who professes to teach this ‘stuff’; however, within my [American] version of Google, there are two websites (1) Answers.com, and another, Misspelled.com, which both, state that “earnt” is a common “misspelling” of the word ‘earned’ !! Quote: Earn1 (ûrn) tr.v., earned, earn·ing, earns. Quote: Earned Common "misspelling" (s) of earned is: "earnt" Moreover, my copy of The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition 2000, does not show any listing of the non-word [earnt]. TRANSITIVE VERB: Inflected forms: earned, earn·ing, earns 1. To gain especially for the performance of service, labor, or work: earned money by mowing lawns. 2. To acquire or deserve as a result of effort or action: She earned a reputation as a hard worker. 3. To yield as return or profit: a savings account that earns interest on deposited funds. Maybe, somewhere in the non-American, English speaking world, this word it to be found or more commonly used ??? But, in my eighteen + years of education, I ain’t lernt no "earnt" !! :) :) My “day job” is [not] to provide English lessons to Asian students, it is to ensure the apprehension of criminals. Accordingly, this English lesson is free of charge to each of you. Moreover, each of you students (even those who are of the male gender) will receive the letter grade of “A” for today’s assignment !!! (inside joke) :) :) Last, as I do have a day job, and as day will arrive very soon here on the west coast [of America], I will now beg leave of you all and return to my sleep……Why do I even allow myself to get swept up into this nonsense !!?? | Wocca - u seem to have a "caged" mentality. Why do you always think that when other members don't agree with you, they are ganging up against u. Why don't u take the mirror u showed me and take a good look at yourself. U might be surprise that the reflection looks quite different. Rogerinca - your goregoing your sleep is worthwhile. We enjoy your comments and views. Keep it up and rest assured that your sacrifice is not unappreciated via your comments - even tho me am friend of Wocca ! BTW, how dow you pronounced "earnt" ?? |

| I don't read Spanish. Am quite simple - understand only English, Chinese, Malay & a few Chinese dialects. English is not my mother-tongue; Chinese is but admittedly am not really proficient in it. I do make mistakes regularly in my English spelling & grammar. Also write Chinese wrongly from time to time. Am very willing to acknowledge this. |

| I don't think anyone here is really concerned about any spelling, grammar & typo error in our messages. English is a foreign language to almost all here ( incl USAmericans ?). However the topic discussed here does warrant the "expert" to display proficiency in the subject he is employed for as a foreign talent - not just to cut/paste. So it is understandable that concern was raised regarding the word "earnt". Probably more than 3/4 of us here come across this word for the 1st time. We have learnt a new "common" word that is obviously not common. Anyway, I think Dracula's thread has aroused much active discussions and the comments here are reflective of the concerns of the locals towards foreign talent. Let's this thread ends here and see whether there is another arousing thread to catch on and enjoy. PS - And this word is pronounced the same as "earned" ? This cannot be common English lah, Hahaha ! |
