Well, having given this some serious thought and then consulting with my ‘American’ version, of the English Dictionary, I have arrived at the following conclusion: Maybe, it is easier to take “earnt” money out of the country, than it is to depart with [earned] money ?? :) :) 我不能抵抗这!!!

Local chinese make the mistake of thinking very highly of the expats. This is because expats have good earning and spending power. So it makes the locals feel small. And the expats get big-headed.

"WOCCA WRITES: There are minimal government restrictions on foreigners doing that these days, RITA After all once earnt, it is their money .... " Of course, it's their money! I was kidding. I meant that actually not all foreigners worked in China for money. :)

Indeed we have the same situation over the last 50 yrs in our country until recent years. I think this is due to more exposure of our people. Highly recommended to the Chinese nationals - try to travel out and see more of the real world yourselves. Every country has its talented, rich and poor. Beggars are present in every country - just a matter of more or less. China is doing very well. In my view, Chinese people are generally very intelligent & I am sure it is a matter of time that they would stride out into the world holding their heads high. U just need a good and strong govt (which you already have)which was lacking before the communist era. Because of the deeply-rooted Confucianism culture, u may also need to adjust your thinking process when handling other people - on the basis of "when scholar meets soldier". U are the scolars, of cos ! By all means accept foreign talents - no man is an island. But learn to discern between the good, the bad & the ugly.

Pinetree, you make some very good points !!! I would add, just look around at China today, and I think all Chinese citizens should be so very proud of what they have accomplished, as a nation and as a people, in such a [relatively] short period of time !!! Awesome !!!

Well, maybe my English is not that update now - but indeed this is the 1st time I understand that "earned" can be spelt as "earnt" as well. Is this British English or USAmerican English - just curious ? USAmericans tend to make something not their origin, different - something we also witness in the Taiwanese brand of Mandarin. Whilst spoken language can be attributed to local accent, writing and spelling should not be influenced by such. Wonder whether it has got anything to do with nationality complex ? Hahaha !! Don't take this to heart. Maybe another thread on this ?
