Many four or five star hotels do have spas/saunas/swimming pools. But you'd better ask for details before booking!

It's pretty hard to give you a good answer since you didn't really say what you're interested in seeing...
Anyway, the easiest route would be Beijing (3 days), Hangzhou (2 days), Shanghai (3 days), Xi'an (3 days) and back to Beijing (3 days). All these can be linked by comfortable trains.

Beijing : Great Wall
Xi'an : Terra Cotta Warrior
Guilin,Yangshuo :stunning natural scenery
HongKong : Metropolitan ,Shopping Paradise

arrive in Beijing at first , after sightseeing ,take a night train to Xi'an ,then fly to Guilin ,Hongkong ,and back home

Thank you to evryone who have given advice. I shall ask further questions if I have them as you all seem very knowledgeable about China. Oh do you think this way would be cheaper than an organised tour? How easy is it to arrange a personal tour guide once we have arrived in the various places?

The price was depended on which hotel and transportation will you choose.

I don't think you need a tour guide accompany you all the day!But in some place, you can ask for a tour guide, for example, forbidden city......They have!

I'll offer to guide you in Shanghai and Hangzhou. :) Oh, and even Beijing and Xi'an, if someone pays for my ticket there and back!

Any recommendations for good hotels with nice faciities eg heated indoor swimming pool etc...in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and places mentioned by others on this board.
