Anyway, the easiest route would be Beijing (3 days), Hangzhou (2 days), Shanghai (3 days), Xi'an (3 days) and back to Beijing (3 days). All these can be linked by comfortable trains.

Oh do you think this way would be cheaper than an organised tour? How easy is it to arrange a personal tour guide once we have arrived in the various places?

Yeah right!!!! I just about got enough money to pay for the flight for myself. Can anyone give me some indication of price for tour guide to Forbidden Palace, Terracotta soldiers etc... Will I find tour guides outside most tourist places????
Any recommendations for good hotels with nice faciities eg heated indoor swimming pool etc...in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and places mentioned by others on this board.
